A Vision of Independence -
The New Facility is Open
161 Chrystie Street
Self-sufficiency is the guiding principle behind the purchase and construction of DP's new property, located in one of NYC's most vibrant artistic communities. The new bi-level accessible space is a fully flexible state-of-the-art laboratory theater.
~The Main Stage Theater is a beautifully
designed space for artists to create and collaborate. With state-of-the-art
technology, this will be the first of its kind in NYC dedicated to emerging
artists. The bi-level design includes dressing rooms, restrooms, technical
and storage areas and seating for up to 120 audience members. Includes
state of the art lighting, sound & video equipment and internet
connectivity among other amenities.*
~ The Lounge will serve as the entrance to the theater and a meeting place for artists and audiences. Soon to have a fully operational bar and an auxiliary stage, the Lounge will conjur feelings of the Bowery loft space and will be promoted as a Conversation Bar. It will also provide earned income in the evenings, while serving as a community center by day, housing our free senior and youth theatre workshops.
~The Rehearsal Studio on the lower level available to performing artists at subsidized rates as well as a studio for DP artists free of charge.
~ The Office is being specifically designed to accommodate the increased staffing required for the new facility and will include state-of-the-art technology and telecommunications for all of DP's operational needs.
In order to ensure our success, we are working with experts in design and construction. Our architect, Charles Gifford of Meyer + Gifford, has extensive experience building theaters. His resume includes The New Victory, the Joyce Theatre, the Harvey at BAM, making him well-suited to our project. As a leading provider of NYC construction services, Westerman Construction brings over 16 years of expertise and top level management on complex projects in sensitive locations. Over 75% of their work is for non-profit institutions.
We hope you'll join us for an exciting season as we make further preparations
to move into our new space. As always, your contribution helps us realize
our vision of true community service, and allows us to experience true
community support. For more information about our new space and capital
campaign, please call us at 212.219.0736.
*Artists, please note our seating plans (on view on our website) are not 100% accurate and are subject to change. The closest approximation to the current layout is the South Thrust layout, with seating on three sides. We are still expecting our seating risers and alas, there are no couches, yet. As always, best to arrange a site visit!
